For large housing construction projects after 2030, the outgoing cabinet is analyzing six zones in the north, east and south of the country. One of the target regions is the “Frisian Cities”. These are the locations of Heerenveen, Drachten, Sneek and Leeuwarden.
To combat the housing shortage in the future, the outgoing cabinet is investigating the possibility of implementing large housing projects in six different areas in the north, east and south of the Netherlands after 2030. This is what the outgoing Housing Minister wrote, Hugo de Jonge (CDA), to the House of Representatives on Wednesday. He wants to plan for after 2030, because it takes an average of ten years to complete new construction projects.
The Ministries of the Interior, Economic Affairs and Infrastructure have jointly investigated which areas of the Netherlands are most suitable for this potential large-scale real estate development. Among other things, the accessibility of regions, employment and the burden on nature were examined.
In the letter addressed to the House, “the Frisian cities” are mentioned as an area of large-scale housing construction. As explained, these are Heerenveen, Drachten, Sneek and Leeuwarden. Large-scale housing construction will have to take place mainly along the Lelylijn corridor (Heerenveen and Drachten), which is still to be built in the future.
Additionally, additional “substantial commitment” is also required from Leeuwarden and Sneek, both with infill and expansion. In Heerenveen this includes the A32 zone, the center (extension) and Heerenveen-West. According to the government, the construction of a station in Drachten offers opportunities for a “leap of scale.”
New city districts
A large-scale housing location in Leeuwarden can be added, separately or as part of the pre-designated NOVEX area. NOVEX areas are 17 locations where entirely new neighborhoods and urban districts are being built under the direction of the government. The government points out possibilities at the railway dock (expansion) and at Zuidlanden/Middelsee. This is the expansion of an area that is already partially under development, including space for a new station in Werpsterhoek.
In addition to the “Frisian cities”, the cities of Brabant, Twente, the entire province of Limburg, the Groningen-Assen area and the urban triangle Apeldoorn-Deventer-Zutphen offer the most favorable conditions for large-scale housing construction. said the minister.
