On the sidewalk outside the Enschede synagogue there is a sign: “Open.” The door appears to be locked, but after ringing the bell, it opens quickly and hospitably.
“We would like to open our doors wide, but unfortunately that is not possible,” explains Irene Berg (78). ‘We have been extremely vigilant since 7 October, but in reality we have been on guard for 3,000 years. Fortunately, we have only received positive messages of support so far.’
The synagogue is part of the largest museum in the Netherlands, an association of the most beautiful places of worship in the Netherlands.
