Hurricane Oscar, power restoration obstacles

Havana- Cubans yesterday anxiously awaited the restoration of electrical services that had stalled after a technical failure on Friday, a situation that could in turn become more tense as the typhoon transits the eastern part of the island.

Authorities hope to lift the national energy system which collapsed after damage to the Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Power Plant on Monday or Tuesday morning, the Minister of Energy and Mines, Vicente de la O, said in a press conference.

However, De la O acknowledged that the passage of Hurricane Oscar, whose path will affect the eastern part of the country and which is expected to make landfall last night, will add “additional inconvenience” to the restoration of electricity, because – he said – the area finds “strong generation poles” from fluid.

Precisely in that area there are the Felton factory in Holguín, Renté in Santiago de Cuba, the Moa factory and one of the lakes that the authorities contracted to Türkiye to produce the liquid.

The energy emergency began on Thursday evening when, at rush hour, 50% of the country was in darkness due to the lack of power generation, a situation that led to the special appearance of Prime Minister Manuel Marrero who announced austerity measures such as the suspension of non-essential classes or activities, as well as the announcement rate increase.
