American pharmaceutical company Gilead rose 8.5 percent. The company showed good results in the first large trial of its HIV drug, Lenacapavir. Gilead claims the drug can prevent 100 percent of HIV infections among women and adolescents in Africa. The medication only needs to be injected twice a year. Gilead hopes this will make the drug much easier to use than other HIV drugs.

The euro was worth $1.0703, compared to $1.0706 at the close of European stock markets. A barrel of US oil costs 0.7 percent more, at $82.17. Brent oil rose 0.8 percent to $85.71 per barrel.
