Harry Potter illustration auctioned for $1.9 million

Jem Boet

This is the cover illustration for the first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone from 1997. The drawing was previously thought to sell for between $400,000 and $600,000. In 2001, the same drawing sold for approximately $105,000, but not all parts of the Harry Potter series had yet been published.

The drawing was made by Thomas Taylor. According to Sotheby’s, he was one of the first to read the book at the time. Taylor, who now writes and illustrates children’s books, said in a statement from the auction house that he is proud of the “magical start” to his career.
