German dock workers’ strike spreads

Strikes were also held on Tuesday in Hamburg, Germany’s largest port, and in Bremerhaven. Port workers will protest on Wednesday in front of the headquarters of the Association of German Port Operators (ZDS) in Hamburg.

With the new strikes, the Verdi union wants to increase the pressure on employers to accept higher wage demands. For example, due to previous strikes, ships were not unloaded or loaded and there was congestion at container terminals.

New collective bargaining agreement

Verdi is currently negotiating a new collective agreement for around 11,500 employees at German North Sea ports, but negotiations with employers have so far yielded no results. The union is demanding, among other things, an increase in hourly wages of 3 euros and higher shift allowances.

A fourth round of negotiations between the union and employers is expected to take place later this week.
