BBB Ministers: Looking beyond nitrogen for nature restoration

Jem Boet

“I think nature and nitrogen are too close,” Wiersma says in his introduction. “I hope we can expand that discussion.” Rummenie agrees. He wants to start from scratch with a nature restoration policy. “In a sense, we’re starting from scratch again,” he says.

Wiersma points out that he wants to address water management, among other things, to improve the state of nature. Rummenie wants, among other things, a “zero measure” for nature.

House parties have been trying to make nitrogen a less important factor in nature restoration policy for some time, but this has proven more difficult than expected. Although other factors in nature also influence, the judge will not allow more nitrogen to be added while precipitation in sensitive nature is as high as now.
