According to Kromhout, it is a sequel to the 1964 De Blauwe Boekanier, titled The Treasure of the Blauwe Boekanier. He says he found the follow-up story while going through Dragt’s papers. “We recently found an old manuscript. The story is sixty years old, but it was never published.”
Together with Dragt, he modernised the language somewhat. “She asked me if I wanted to fix it, as she herself said,” Kromhout told ANP. “I discussed everything with Tonke and read it to her. It recently received her approval.” He wrote the afterword himself, which he was also able to read to her.
The Blue Buccaneer
The Blue Buccaneer’s Treasure will be featured at Children’s Book Week next September. The first story, The Blue Buccaneer, was a gift from Children’s Book Week in 1964.
Tonke Dragt died on Friday at the age of 93.
