The Babuurstermolen in Tjerkwerd in mourning. The octagonal polder mill was built in 1882 and is land-based, meaning that the rods reach the ground and therefore there is no scaffolding. Until the arrival of a pumping station in 1990, the mill drained the area independently. Since 2006, the mill has served as a backup pumping station in case of severe flooding. There is a miller’s house near the mill yard. Photo by: Simon Bleeker
