Fitness guru Richard Simmons dies at 76

Simmons rose to fame in the 1970s and 1980s through his chain of gyms, including The Anatomy Asylum in Los Angeles. The fitness guru made dozens of fitness tapes that were sold on video and DVD, including Sweatin’ to the Oldies and Party Off The Pounds.

The fitness hero became known in part for his bright, energetic performances. But for the past ten years, Simmons has emphatically avoided the spotlight and public appearances. He rarely responded to media reports, although he did speak out when plans for a film about his life were recently floated. Simmons didn’t think it was a good idea.
