“Aura” is the 2024 “Youth Word of the Year”. In a vote by the Langenscheidt-Verlag among the top three terms, “Aura” took first place. The winning words that describe a person’s special charm and charisma were announced live at the 76th Frankfurt Book Fair.
According to information, “Aura” appeared just before the term “Talahon” – a term for young men in fake luxury clothes. The group called Talahon caused a stir on social media, and there were racist discussions about migration and youth culture. The term “scissors” ranked third in the voting. In youth language, “scissors” means admitting a mistake or blaming.
“Youth Word of the Year” has been around since 2008. Last year, “silly” won the race. It describes awkward and silly people or behavior. Only since 2020 have young people aged between 11 and 20 been able to choose the youth word of the year only. According to the publisher, the number of votes submitted was once again in the six-digit range.
