The PVV already helped the law obtain a majority in the House of Representatives and now appears to support it in the Senate as well. However, that party wants to carefully observe the consequences. Critics fear that landlords will put their properties up for sale en masse, because renting is no longer profitable due to lower rents. Rarely has a bill caused such a stir in a sector, De Jonge also acknowledged.
BBB and VVD most strongly voiced landlord concerns in the rental law debates. MP Mona Keijzer (BBB), future Housing Minister in the next cabinet, described the law as a violation of property rights and “a mortgage on other people’s wallets.” The BBB also strongly opposes the bill in the Senate.
Support at your fingertips
Although BBB has the majority of seats in the Senate and the VVD and other right-wing parties are also opposed, support for the law appears to be within reach. Not only the left-wing parties want the law, but also the CDA and the Christian Union support De Jonge’s plans.
If the Senate approves the law next week, it will go into effect on July 1.
