Judge Pieter ter Berg (73) says goodbye to the Leeuwarden Court of Appeal: ‘Imposing a life sentence is terrible’

He is a judge to the core, but since justice can no longer be administered in the Netherlands after the age of 73, Pieter ter Berg recently said goodbye to the Leeuwarden Court of Appeal. Luckily for him, he can still be a judge in the Antilles. “There is no better time to be a judge than now.”

He is tall, calm and thoughtful. His eyes are as blue as his sweater and every once in a while he lets out a soft laugh across the room. Pieter ter Berg on his profession: “Being a judge is a basic attitude. What is it about? “Don’t let yourself be surprised by anything, first listen to what people have to say, have inner balance and respect for others.”

Course 1969-1975: Law studies in Tilburg (1969 – 1975)

1975-1977 military service, trained as a prisoner of war interrogator during the Cold War (in Russian).

Career 1977-1990 lawyer in Leeuwarden and Dokkum; yes Since 1988 he has been a judge in Assen, then in Middelburg, twice in the former Netherlands Antilles (a total of 11 years) and since 2007 at the court in Leeuwarden.
