US House of Representatives wants sanctions against ICC over Netanyahu arrest warrant

The law would allow Republicans to impose sanctions on people “engaged in any effort to investigate, arrest, detain, or prosecute a protected person of the United States and its allies.” Possible measures include a ban on real estate transactions in the United States and the blocking and revocation of visas.

ICC prosecutor Karim Khan requested arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and three Hamas leaders more than two weeks ago. They are said to be guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Small chance of success

The ICC’s move sparked outraged reactions from Republicans and Democrats in Congress. President Joe Biden was also critical. According to the president, “there is no equality” between Israel and Hamas. At the same time, he said that he did not support sanctions against the ICC.

Therefore, it is unlikely that the Senate, where Democrats are in the majority, will approve the bill, CNN concludes among others.
