“We will have an incredible victory in four months, the greatest victory in the great history of our country,” Trump said in his first speech since Saturday’s assassination attempt.

The former US president promised in his nomination speech to be the “president of all Americans and not half of them.” “A victory by half is not a victory. We need to heal the discord and division in our society.”

With a large bandage on his right ear, Trump began talking about Saturday’s attack early in his speech. “I’ll do that once and never again, because it’s too painful to talk about.”

He then recounted Saturday’s events almost step by step. As he spoke at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, his head turned toward the screen behind him that displayed numbers about his immigration policies.

“I felt something hit me and I immediately thought: that could only be a bullet. I felt my ear and my hand were covered in blood. We now know that if I had not turned my head, the bullet would have hit perfectly and I would not be here now, I would not be there anymore. But I had God on my side. It was a quarter of an inch (about 6 millimeters, ed.), but I should not be here,” Trump said, after which the audience in the room told him otherwise by shouting: “Yes, you are!”

He then asked for a minute of silence for the victim who died in the attack and kissed the helmet of the former firefighter.

Witch hunt

The former president also spoke of a “partisan witch hunt” against him. He called on Democrats to stop portraying their political opponents as threats to democracy.

According to Trump, the United States has become a “country in decline” under President Joe Biden. He promised, among other things, to address the “immigration crisis,” cut taxes and ease costly living expenses. “It’s time for change,” he said. “To make America safe, free and great again.”

Trump, 78, had entered the room a few hours before his speech to the sounds of classic AC/DC rock. Back in the darkafter which he took a seat in the VIP box.. From there, he watched a series of speakers precede him, including Mike Pompeo, Trump’s Secretary of State, Trump’s lawyer Alina Habba, his son Eric Trump and WWF wrestling legend Hulk Hogan.
