The inmate accused of stabbing Derek Chauvin 22 times said he attacked him on Black Friday as a symbolic connection to BLM

  • Derek Chauvin, the former cop jailed for murdering George Floyd, was stabbed 22 times in prison.

  • The accused attacker told FBI agents he struck on Black Friday in connection with the BLM movement.

  • Black Friday is an annual shopping event with no links to the BLM movement.

A federal inmate accused of stabbing the former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin gave an unconventional reason for the attack’s timing, federal prosecutors said.

The suspect, John Turscak, told FBI agents that he attacked Chauvin on Black Friday as a symbolic connection to the Black Lives Matter movement and the “Black Hand” hallmark associated with the Mexican Mafia, the Associated Press reported.

The Black Lives Matter movement gained global momentum in 2020 following the death of George Floyd, whom a judge later convicted Chauvin of murdering.

Black Friday is an annual shopping event that falls on the Friday after Thanksgiving in the United States and is known for retailers offering significant discounts and deals — it has no connection to the Black Lives Matter movement.

Turscak is accused of stabbing Chauvin 22 times with an improvised knife in the prison’s law library in Tucson, Arizona.

Chauvin, who is serving a sentence of 22.5 years, was taken to a hospital for treatment, the AP reported.

Turscak was scheduled to complete his current sentence in 2026 but now faces multiple charges, including attempted murder.

Turscak led a faction of the Mexican Mafia in the Los Angeles area in the late 1990s before becoming an FBI informant. But the bureau later dropped him because he continued to engage in criminal activities, the AP reported, citing court records.

He was convicted after pleading guilty to racketeering and conspiring to kill a gang rival.
