A federal inmate accused of stabbing former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin gave bizarre rationale for the timing of the attack, federal prosecutors said.

The suspect, John Turscak, told FBI agents that he attacked Chauvin on Black Friday as a symbolic connection to the Black Lives Matter movement, the Associated Press reported.

The Black Lives Matter movement gained global momentum in 2020 following the death of Black man George Floyd, whom Chauvin was later convicted of murdering.

Black Friday is an annual shopping event that falls on the Friday after Thanksgiving in the United States and is marked by retailers offering discounts and deals. It has no connection to the Black Lives Matter movement.

Turscak is accused of stabbing Chauvin 22 times with an improvised knife in the prison’s law library in Tucson, Arizona.

Chauvin, who is currently serving a sentence of 22 1/2 years, was taken to a hospital for treatment, per the AP.

Turscak was scheduled to complete his current sentence in 2026 but now faces multiple charges, including attempted murder.

Turscak led a faction of the Mexican Mafia in the Los Angeles area in the late 1990s before becoming an FBI informant, but was later dropped because he continued to engage in criminal activities, the AP reported, citing court records.

He was jailed after pleading guilty to racketeering and conspiring to kill a gang rival.
