A large-scale survey in Ukraine and 14 other European countries also shows that the Netherlands is one of the European countries where opinions on Ukraine are highly polarised. This polarisation in countries such as the Netherlands, coupled with differences between European countries, poses a problem when it comes to finding a common direction, for example, at the upcoming NATO summit in Washington, the think tank analyses.
In the Netherlands, for example, there is a substantial group of people who want Ukraine to negotiate peace with Russia and a large group of people who want Ukraine to be better armed to resist Russia.
Germany and France, among others, belong to this group of deeply divided countries. According to the report compiled by the group of experts based on the survey, this makes it difficult to predict how the common European position will ultimately develop. Especially if the situation in these countries were to go one way or the other.
According to this survey, the Dutch are also very divided on the question of whether Ukraine should eventually join the EU. Unlike, for example, the Bulgarians, where a clear majority believes that this should not happen, or the Spanish, who are overwhelmingly in favour of it.
