NVM: holiday homes are much less popular, but more expensive

According to a spokesperson for the estate agents association, this is because the holiday home market is evolving alongside shortages in the normal housing market. There was an increase for the first time at the end of last year, after months of declines due to rising mortgage prices.

The new increase in holiday home prices, to an unprecedented average of 228,000 euros, is also due to the fact that more and more luxury villas are being built. One in ten holiday homes last year cost more than half a million euros, which a few years before was only a small percentage.

The drop in demand is also a recovery effect of the coronavirus pandemic. Then suddenly a lot of people wanted a vacation home because they had money left and traveling was more difficult. This led to house prices rising by almost a quarter in 2022.
