Millions of Bengalis take to the streets after PM resigns

Crowds wave flags and dance on tanks in the streets of Dhaka, now that Hasina has resigned after weeks of bloody protests and fled to neighbouring India. Protesters broke through the fences of her official residence on Monday and ransacked the building. Footage from Bangladesh’s Channel 24 shows people carrying furniture, televisions and books outside and waving at cameras.

Things have also spiralled out of control elsewhere. The homes of Hasina’s allies have been attacked and the building of a state broadcaster has been set on fire. Several statues of Hasina’s father, Mujibur Rahman, a hero of Bangladesh’s independence, have been vandalised.

Army chief Waker-Uz-Zaman has called on protesters to remain calm and go home. He announced in a televised address that there will be an interim government now that Hasina has left the country.
