GroenLinks-PvdA has become the party with the most votes in the elections to the European Parliament. According to the first Ipsos I&O/NOS exit poll, the party will win 8 seats. The PVV follows with 7.
Even if GroenLinks-PvdA became the largest, it would have to accept a loss. The PvdA now has 6 and GroenLinks has 3 MEPs, a total of 9.
Under the leadership of Frans Timmermans, the PvdA won the European elections in the Netherlands in 2019. GroenLinks also won somewhat in 2019. More seats can be allocated in these elections than five years ago.
Although the two parties form a joint faction in the Senate and the House of Representatives, they will each take a seat in their own European group after the European elections. The PvdA members join the Social Democrats and the GroenLinks join the Greens. How many PvdA members and how many GroenLinks members will end up in the new European Parliament depends on the preferential votes cast.
Newcomers from BBB and NSC
Caroline van der Plas’s BBB has 2 seats in the European Parliament, Pieter Omtzigt’s NSC with 1 seat. This is demonstrated by the first Ipsos I&O/NOS exit poll. Both parties participated for the first time in the European elections.
Election results only on Sunday
The Netherlands elected 31 of the 720 seats in the new European Parliament on Thursday. Election results may not be announced until Sunday. Most EU member states vote on Sunday.
Christian Union and Forum for Democracy disappear
The Christian Union appears to be disappearing from the European Parliament, according to the Ipsos I&O exit poll commissioned by NOS. Unlike on other occasions, the party did not participate in these elections together with the SGP. That small Christian party seems to win 1 seat.
The Forum for Democracy, which entered parliament with 4 seats in 2019, will also not win a seat according to the exit poll. That radical right faction has already crumbled in recent years.
