iPad mini 7 With Its A17 Pro Is A Gaming Tablet Worthy Of A AAA Title; Resident Evil 4 Remake Can Run At 50+FPS At 840p, With Some Improvements Added To The Mix

The A17 Pro upgrade that Apple introduced to the iPad mini 7 gives the compact device some impressive gaming capabilities, despite the fact that the chipset has one less GPU core than the part running in the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. In a brief gameplay trailer showing Resident Evil 4 Remake, the compact version was able to run the AAA title at over 50FPS, with the game often hitting 60FPS in some areas. Unfortunately, as you might expect, achieving this framerate comes at the expense of image quality, and the iPad mini 7 also had to make some improvements to improve performance.

Significantly reduced image quality can be seen on the iPad mini 7 when running Resident Evil 4 Remake, as the game is scaled up at 840p

Before we begin, it’s important to note that Resident Evil 4 Remake was developed on Capcom’s RE Engine, which is one of the most optimized platforms out there for delivering smooth gameplay and incredible visual enhancements, even when running on low-power machines. It’s no surprise, therefore, that the game performs just as well as it does on the iPad mini 7, with YouTuber Dame Tech showing Capcom’s latest survival-horror entry running at 1,280 x 840 resolution, with Apple’s MetalFX upscaling method set for quality.

It’s understandable why Resident Evil 4 Remake is forced to run at a lower resolution, as some users may prioritize smooth gameplay at the expense of image quality. Additionally, on a small 8.3-inch screen like the iPad mini 7, you might not notice some noticeable differences because the pixels are so dense, but one particular area we noticed experienced extreme image degradation was Leon Kennedy’s hair. These visual imperfections can be seen when enabling upscalers like AMD’s FSR, so are most likely the result of MetalFX upgrading to 840p causing pixelation.

Hair annoyance aside, we’re sure anyone who wants something that’s highly portable and capable of running AAA games will have no problem compromising a bit when it comes to the iPad mini 7. Of course, with the tablet currently listed for $484 on Amazon for the Wi-Fi only model and 128GB of storage, potential buyers will be banking on the fact that more games like this will come to iPadOS and be in playable condition.
