Eefje de Visser’s career has been wonderful since she won the Dutch Grand Prix in 2009. Each record sounds slightly different and yet completely like Eefje. She made her debut with traditional, somewhat singer-songwriter-like songs on acoustic guitar. From Koek (2011), through the hypnotic Is and the tingling hybrid form of electronics and live instruments op Nightshade growing towards electronics, inspired by dance music Bittersweeta temporary high point.
Their fifth album Nostalgic It sounds less grandiose and less danceable than its predecessor. That had a lot to do with the period after that hit album was released; there was a pandemic, a pregnancy, and motherhood. The consequences of that shrinking world can be heard in Nostalgicwhich tells the story of the search for human connection.
The tone is warm, intimate and earthy, with (again) room for acoustic guitar and prominent roles for the vibrant bass parts, heavenly harmonies in the choruses (including her father) and mesmerizing synths. The enigmatic, somewhat husky lyrics and strong melodies are preserved. The progression is in the refinement: Nostalgic It is more detailed, more thoughtful and more sensitive than its predecessor. And almost as strong.
