Former Hague councilor De Mos acquitted in bribery appeal

Former The Hague councilor Richard de Mos was acquitted of bribery charges by the Hague court on Friday along with six other suspects. This ends a long legal battle for the politician. According to the prosecution, Richard de Mos and his colleague from Hart voor Den Haag, Rachid Guernaoui, were bribed with gifts and promises by businessmen in The Hague. De Mos and Guernaoui are said to have favored these businessmen. The Court did not agree with this.

These are three real estate businessmen and two restaurant businessmen. The Rotterdam court acquitted the seven suspects in 2023 of participation in a criminal organization and corruption. The Public Ministry then appealed.

As a councilor in The Hague, De Mos would have promised a night permit to one of the businessmen. He also stated in his election manifesto that he would introduce a discount on leases, a plan that suited property developers. The plan never became policy. The friendly businessmen transferred 100,000 euros to the Groep De Mos/Hart party fund for The Hague.

The Justice Department demanded a six-month suspended prison sentence against De Mos, 240 hours of community service, a fine and a ban from holding official positions for four years.
