Currently in many homes there is debate about whether to turn on the heating. Or is it still possible with a warm sweater? According to Statistics Netherlands (CBS), Dutch households consumed 11 percent less natural gas last year than in 2022, although winters were comparable in terms of temperature. Annual energy consumption in the Netherlands fell by 17 percent between 2000 and 2023, partly due to lower use of fossil fuels. In recent years, this decline has been mainly driven by the energy crisis.
